78-year-old Glitter, was handed a 16-year sentence for attempted rape, unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, and four counts of indecent assault in 2015.

Now he could be released in February 2023.

Sentencing Glitter in 2015 Judge Alistair McCreath said he subject his victims to “real and lasting damage”.

During his trial in 2015, the former pop star apologised for his actions, blaming financial troubles and abuse of alcohol and drugs.

The convicted paedophile claimed: ‘I lost my own dignity, and I am so sorry. I am very sorry.I am sorry today and every day of my life ever since. I am sorry to my fans.’

He has only served half his sentence on the basis that ‘he has kept his nose clean in prison’.

A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman said: ‘Sex offenders released from prison are closely monitored by both the police and the Probation Service and may be recalled to jail if they breach their strict license conditions’.

In few weeks time, Glitter will be free to walk out of the prison gates but will be subjected to strict conditions when released.

It added that the “nature of his determinate sentence means the case won’t go to the Parole Board”.

Terms of licence could include an approved residence, a curfew, GPS tagging, restrictions on internet access, and no unsupervised contact with children.

If these conditions are breached, offenders will be recalled back to prison by the Probation Service.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was first jailed in 1999 after he was caught with images of child abuse. After he was released, he went to Spain and Cuba.

He was then trialed in London for sexually abusing three children between 1975 and 1980, having also served time in 2006 for molesting girls in Vietnam.

During the hearing the court heard how Glitter tried to rape an eight-year-old girl while at the height of his fame and popularity in 1975.
