The iPhone 15 series just debuted at Apple’s September event and Apple made this a much harder decision again this year.
Apple has unveiled four new iPhone 15 models, following the playbook from the iPhone 14 and previous years.
Out of these four, we have two compact-ish iPhones with 6.1-inch screens (the iPhone 15 and the 15 Pro), and two larger ones (the Plus and the Pro Max) with 6.7-inch displays.
Here’s a closer look at the iPhone 15 series.

DESIGN
All models get USB-C and Pro models swap stainless steel for much lighter titanium chassis.
There is a slight difference in the USB-C specification for the iPhone 15 vanilla and Pro models.
iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 mini get slower speeds, while only the Pro models support USB 3 speeds of up to 10Gbps, which is 10X faster than before.
Another big change that is coming to all iPhones is the move to a USB-C port from Lightning.
Keep in mind that Apple provides a basic USB-C cable with all new iPhone 15 models, but if you will need a different cable for the Pro models that you have to purchase separately to benefit from the faster speeds.
When it comes to sizes, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 mini are almost unchanged, with some very, very minor changes, so much so that some (but not all) older iPhone cases may fit.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro max, however, have different dimensions. That is mostly thanks to the reduced screen bezel size, it’s not a huge difference but it is there.
Other than the overall size difference the design of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is virtually identical.
The slightly curved design should make them more pleasant to hold.
Apple is using the same familiar physical buttons for power and volume as before. However, the Action Button is the other big change coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
The mute switch is gone, replaced by this multifunction button that can be customized to handle a variety of tasks or if you prefer it can still just function as mute.
Here are some of the new Action button functions:
- – mute the phone
- – turn on a Focus mode
- – start the flashlight
- – start the camera
- – start a voice recording
- – open Siri shortcuts
- – start digital magnifying glass feature
- – open the accessibility settings
Another very curious detail is that Apple is also changing the internal layout with the iPhone 15 Pro.
Last year, the company introduced a new internal layout for the vanilla iPhone 14 models but not for the Pros.
The benefits of that design included easier and cheaper repairs, and now this new design layout arrives to the iPhone 15 Pro.
This means you no longer need to pay north of $500 for a cracked glass back!
DISPLAY
- Shift to LIPO display tech
Apple seems to have found the sweet spot for screen sizes and we have the same 6.1-inch screen size on the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, and then a 6.7-inch screen on the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
As for all the rest, naturally, all four iPhone 15 models will use OLED screens, with some slight differences in the peak brightness (the Pro and Pro Max models will be able to get brighter).
As for ProMotion 120Hz, this remains a feature reserved for the Pro and Pro Max models, it’s simply the underlying LTPO panel that should offer improved power efficiency and a brighter image.
PROCESSOR
- The regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 mini models run on the Apple A16 Bionic chip, the same as in the 14 Pro series, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max get the next generation Apple A17 Pro processor, built on brand new and far more efficient 3nm technology.
Another year of the iPhone as the most powerful smartphone in the world is likely with the jump to Apple’s A17 Bionic chipset.
The A17 Bionic is the first 3nm chipset in an iPhone.
The new A17 chip brings a number of improvements:Industry’s first 3 nm chip, uses extreme UV lithography
- – 19 billion transistors
- – It features a breakthrough new 6-core GPU
- – It has 10% faster performance cores, the fastest mobile CPU in existence
- – The 4-efficiency cores are unmatched with three times the performance per watt ratio of competition
- – Neural engine id 2X faster, supporting 35 trillion operations per second
- – Dedicated engines for pro features – ProRes codec, Pro Display engine, AV1 decoder for more efficient video experience
Connectivity and Wi-Fi support
The iPhone 15 Pro and the 15 Pro Max models get Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, while the regular models remain limited to Wi-Fi 6.
Wi-Fi 6E might be a big deal for some users: while Wi-Fi 6 supports the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, Wi-Fi 6E adds support for 6GHz Wi-Fi networks.

Wi-Fi 6E comes with the promise for much faster wireless speeds, a lower latency, and less interference, but you do need to have a Wi-Fi 6E router.
Those are available, but not on all networks as the technology is fairly new, so if it’s about your home network, you might want to upgrade your router to use this latest tech.
There is a number of other popular Apple devices that already have Wi-Fi 6E: the iPad Pro models starting from 2022, the 2023 Macbook Pros, as well as the 2023 Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro.
Satellite connectivity is included for free for 2 years on all iPhone 15 models, and later on it will require a subscription.
One thing that all four models share is the modem. We get a Qualcomm-made modem on all four.
The iPhone 15 family also comes with a brand new Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip.
