Denmark: King Frederik And Queen Mary To Spend Christmas Separate From Prince Joachim And Princess Marie
King Frederik and Queen Mary have announced their Christmas plans with their children—Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine.
According to a statement and a series of photos shared on the Danish royal family’s official Instagram, the royal family will celebrate Christmas at Marselisborg Castle, with Queen Margrethe also in attendance.
However, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie will not be joining them, as they will be celebrating the holiday with Princess Marie’s family.
This comes after a strained relationship between Prince Joachim and the rest of the family, following the removal of their children’s royal titles in 2022 by Queen Margrethe.
The official statement read: “This year, Aarhus will once again provide the setting for the Royal Family’s Christmas. Their Majesties The King and Queen will join Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine to celebrate Christmas at Marselisborg Castle with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe.
“Since King Frederik’s childhood, the castle in Aarhus has been the focal point of the royal family’s Christmas celebrations, with a few exceptions. The King will stay at the castle from December 23rd to 26th, and during this time, the Royal Life Guard will perform a daily changing of the guard at noon.”
Queen Margrethe will remain at Marselisborg Castle from December 20th to 30th. During the royal stay, the Royal Life Guard will march daily at 11:50 AM from Gardergården to the castle’s main gate, where the ceremony will take place with music from the Tambour Corps.
The statement also noted: “Prince Joachim and Princess Marie will celebrate Christmas with their children, alongside Princess Marie’s family.”
The statement concluded with details about King Frederik’s first New Year’s speech. It will take place at Frederik VIII’s Palace in Amalienborg at 6:00 PM, marking his first address as Denmark’s reigning monarch.
Last year, Queen Margrethe made the surprise announcement that she would step down after 52 years on the throne, passing it on to Crown Prince Frederik.
Queen Margrethe explained her decision: “In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. It went well, thanks to the skilled healthcare staff. Of course, the surgery led me to think about the future—whether it was time to pass on the responsibility. I have decided now is the right time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark and leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”
