Former French President François Hollande Urges EU To Sanction Elon Musk And Impose Tariffs If Trump Targets Europe
Former French President François Hollande has called on the European Union to impose sanctions on Elon Musk’s companies and retaliate with tariffs on U.S. goods if Donald Trump adopts a tough stance against Europe after his re-election.
Hollande, who served as France’s president from 2012 to 2017 and witnessed Trump’s first term in office, criticized Trump’s lack of regard for the EU as a partner. Speaking to MailOnline, he urged the EU to assert itself to earn Trump’s respect.
“To Donald Trump, the EU is not even a partner. It’s just an entity responsible for its own security and investments in the U.S. if it wishes. We do not count in his vision, as unpleasant as it may seem,” Hollande remarked.
He suggested a firm response if Trump imposes tariffs on the EU, including targeting Musk’s ventures. “If Trump hits the EU with tariffs, there should be a reciprocal reaction. We could target Elon Musk through sanctions on his companies… We must show that we can fight back if the U.S. restricts European goods,” he said.
Hollande even joked that Musk operates like the de facto Vice President of the U.S., adding, “He may even be the President—though Trump might not realize it yet.”
Speaking at an event at King’s College London earlier this month, Hollande also emphasized the EU’s need to prepare for potential economic challenges under Trump’s administration. He warned that Trump’s focus on China and protectionist policies could harm Europe, which risks becoming a “collateral victim.”
Hollande further noted the potential withdrawal of U.S. support for Ukraine under Trump, urging Europe to brace for an increased role in the ongoing conflict with Russia. He concluded by urging European leaders to stand firm: “European leaders must be prepared to fight for their respect from the White House.”
Hollande, who returned to politics as an MP for France’s Socialist Party earlier this year, hinted at a possible bid for the presidency in 2027.
