Music Director At A Catholic Church Dismissed After Church Officials Discovered His Same-S*x Marriage
Fred Szczepanski, known as “Mr. Fred” to parishioners, was terminated from his role at St. Francis Church in Traverse City on October 18, following a report from an anonymous source revealing his 2020 marriage to his longtime partner in Nevada.
After being confronted by Rev. Michael Lingaur, Szczepanski confirmed his marriage and was informed that his services were no longer required after 34 years as the church’s music director. He was also told he would no longer be able to take communion during services.
The Diocese of Gaylord, Michigan, stated that Szczepanski’s marriage violated the conditions of his employment, citing a belief that marriage should be between one man and one woman.
The Diocese explained that a public same-s*x marriage undermines the ministerial agreement required for employment.
This decision sparked protests among parishioners, with choir members wearing black, leaving their seats empty, and refusing to sing during the October 20 mass.
On October 27, supporters staged a picket outside the church with signs such as “Love Not Hate” and “God Includes, Not Excludes.”
Several parishioners, including former choir members, expressed their dismay, with some resigning from the church or planning to do so.
Liz Yarch, a former choir member, criticized the firing, calling it cruel, especially since Szczepanski had planned to retire in January. Choir member Bob Holden argued that the firing was a result of Szczepanski’s s*xuality.
Szczepanski’s husband, Bill Thompson, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with legal fees and expenses. Szczepanski has not commented on whether he plans to pursue legal action for wrongful termination.
