Marius Borg Høiby, the 27-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, will be released from police custody on Wednesday after being detained for over a week. Høiby was arrested in Oslo last Monday on suspicion of r*pe.
While he has been released, the police are now investigating a new alleged sexual offense, although no charges have been filed in relation to it yet.
The Oslo district police confirmed Høiby’s release, stating that they will not seek an extension of his detention, as they believe there is no longer a risk of him destroying evidence or influencing witnesses.
Marius is still facing two charges of r*pe without sexual intercourse, which he denies, and police are investigating the possibility of a third charge. In addition, he is charged with violence in close relationships, damage, threats, and breaching two restraining orders.
His lawyer, Øyvind Bratlien, commented to Norwegian outlet NRK: “This release is not surprising. He should not have been in detention at all. We expect calm and rational evaluations from the police moving forward. We cannot have a police force that fuels the circus.”
Marius was initially arrested on August 4 for “psychologically and physically” attacking a woman in her 20s, later revealed to be his girlfriend. He was detained for 30 hours before being arrested again on September 15 for violating a restraining order.
Earlier this month, after being interviewed by police eight times, Marius issued a statement denying that he assaulted his former girlfriends, Nora Haukland and Juliane Snekkestad, who came forward following news of his August 4 arrest.
While he admitted to assaulting his current girlfriend, Marius denies any wrongdoing in relation to Haukland and Snekkestad.
His lawyer, Øyvind Bratlien, told Norwegian channel TV2: “Marius Borg Høiby has completed all his interrogations, having been questioned eight times, where he provided detailed explanations. He has admitted to difficulties in three relationships, taking responsibility for his part and explaining the abuse in one of those relationships. However, he denies the allegations from Haukland and Snekkestad.”
