Stepfather Arrested After Allegedly Feeding Three-Month-Old Stepdaughter Acid Resulting In Her Death

A 24-year-old man from Shurugwi, Zimbabwe, identified as Tatenda Masunda, has been charged with the murder of his three-month-old stepdaughter after allegedly feeding her acid, resulting in her death.

Authorities reported that Masunda administered acid typically used in gold extraction, which caused the infant’s immediate demise. The shocking incident has left the community in disbelief.

Masunda, who resides in Donga and works at Nash 1 Mine, appeared before Magistrate Patricia Gwetsai. He was ordered to remain in custody as investigations continue. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 15, 2024.

According to reports, the tragedy occurred last Friday. Masunda allegedly returned home with a 200ml bottle filled with acid, which he hid in the house. The child’s mother, Muchaneta Zindera, had left home early that morning to do laundry at a borehole two kilometers away.

Masunda reportedly requested to look after the baby, Tatenda Junior Hwacha, during her absence. It was then that he allegedly administered the acid, causing the infant to scream in pain.

Masunda soon returned the distressed baby to her mother before fleeing the scene. Realizing her child’s deteriorating condition, Zindera rushed the baby to Zvamabande Hospital, where she was later transferred to Shurugwi District Hospital. Sadly, the baby was pronounced dead upon arrival.

After evading capture and fleeing Shurugwi, Masunda was arrested in Chegutu on November 12. He has been formally charged with murder, with prosecutor Tafadzwa Guzete presenting the case against him in court.
