A 19-year-old student, Lyedja Santos, was arrested on Tuesday after attempting a mass shooting at a high school in Natal, Brazil. Santos, a student in the 11th grade, shot an 18-year-old classmate in the head at the E. Berilo Wanderley School, according to the Rio Grande do Norte Civil Police.
After the shooting, Santos entered a classroom and tried to shoot a teacher as students were preparing for a test, but the gun malfunctioned. A student in the classroom reported that a male classmate rushed to restrain Santos when the gun jammed.
“We were about to take the test when she called some friends over to talk,” the student recalled. “A minute later, we heard the shot. At first, we thought it was a bomb. She entered the classroom, aimed at the teacher, but the gun jammed. She turned to run, and a boy in the room tackled her.”
Police recovered a .38 caliber revolver, three knives, and several books about serial killers from Santos. Authorities also found a handwritten note detailing her motive for the attack. In the note, Santos wrote:
“I acted alone, I acquired everything on my own, and no one knew anything about it. To my friends and family, thank you for everything you have done for me, and I’m sorry for everything I’ve caused. I would never have dreamed of dying like this, but this was the best option. I loved each and every one of you, even if I didn’t show it. I hope you understand and forgive me, because that’s the only way I will find peace.”
The student who was shot is in stable condition at Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel Hospital. His father told G1 that the bullet passed through his head without lodging, and he was conscious and oriented at the time of the shooting.
Santos was charged with attempted murder and was scheduled for a court appearance. The Rio Grande do Norte Department of Education condemned the attack and announced that the school would remain closed until Thursday.
“The department is providing all necessary information to assist with the ongoing investigation and offering support to the school community,” the statement read. “We express our solidarity with the family of the affected student and are committed to ensuring the safety of all students, teachers, and staff.”
The incident follows another tragic school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, where a 15-year-old student killed a classmate and a teacher before taking her own life.
