Abia State: Husband Accused of Beating Wife to Death Breaks Silence

Samuel Chukwu, a forensic auditor from Amaokwe Item in Bende LGA, Abia State, has spoken out against accusations that he beat his wife, Jessica Olua, to death. He denies the charges, describing them as a false attempt to damage his reputation.

Jessica, 24, passed away on August 21, 2024, shortly after childbirth, and was buried on November 29.

In an interview with ABN TV, Chukwu explained that his wife died due to alleged negligence by her mother, who, he claims, forced Jessica to deliver at home despite his efforts to ensure she received proper medical care. Chukwu had sent N25,000 to cover transport costs to the hospital when Jessica went into labor.

Chukwu also accused his in-laws of assaulting him and his brother when they traveled to Aba to investigate the circumstances of Jessica’s death.

He further stated that Jessica’s mother denied her proper prenatal care, leading to complications during the pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Chukwu emphasized that there was no abuse in their marriage, having married Jessica in March 2023.

Following their wedding, he took her to Lagos, where she received antenatal care at a reputable medical center. Chukwu claims he covered all medical expenses and supported Jessica throughout her pregnancy, including sending her N47,000 monthly for food and other essentials while she stayed with her mother in Aba.

However, on August 21, 2024, when Jessica went into labor, her mother reportedly insisted on a home birth rather than taking her to the hospital. Chukwu asserts that his wife did not reveal she was in active labor during their phone calls the night before, possibly to hide the fact that they were not using the money he had sent for transport. Complications arose when the placenta did not come out, and Chukwu was later informed that Jessica had passed away shortly after childbirth.

Chukwu maintains that he and Jessica had a peaceful relationship, pointing to their communication records as proof. He questioned why an autopsy was not performed before her burial and reiterated that her death was a tragic medical event, not a result of foul play.

Following Jessica’s death, Chukwu traveled to Aba to investigate further but was reportedly attacked by his in-laws. He sustained injuries, including facial wounds, a dislocated leg, and a swollen skull. The Rapid Response Squad intervened to rescue him and his brother. Despite this, he faces accusations of murder.

Chukwu has since reported the incident to the CPS Aba division and filed a case of attempted murder. He has also vowed to clear his name, stating that his lawyer is gathering evidence, including medical reports and financial records, to prove his innocence in court.

In conclusion, Chukwu expressed the emotional toll of the loss, stating, “I loved my wife and invested in her happiness, health, education, personal development, and wellbeing. These accusations are not only false but deeply hurtful.”
