Chile's President Set To Be The First President In The Country’s History To Welcome A Baby Without Being Married

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric, Latin America’s youngest leader, has announced that he and his partner are expecting a child, making him the first president in the country’s history to welcome a baby without being married.

In an early morning Instagram post on Wednesday, Dec. 4, Boric, 38, and his partner, Paula Carrasco, shared a photo of an ultrasound image along with a heartfelt message: “While we are waiting for you… we will do our best to make sure you can live in a fair and happy Chile.”

This marks a historic milestone for Chile, a socially conservative, Catholic-majority nation. Carrasco, 30, is an environmental chemist working in Chile’s Ministry of the Environment and a professional basketball player for the national team.

The couple met in October 2023 during the Pan American Games in Chile and made their relationship public in September 2024.

Carrasco is Boric’s second partner since he assumed office in March 2022.

His previous relationship was with Irina Karamanos, a political scientist and sociologist who briefly served as first lady before stepping down less than a year later. Boric and Karamanos ended their relationship in November 2023.
