A Chester FC fan, accused of making racist monkey gestures towards a black footballer during a National League North match, was found de@d hours later.
The incident occurred during a local derby against Warrington Town, where the fan was filmed making the gesture at player Bohan Dixon after a teammate scored. The match at the Cal.Delivery Stadium saw further disruptions, including objects being thrown onto the pitch, in front of 2,296 spectators.
Footage of the alleged racist behavior circulated on social media, sparking outrage among fans. Chester FC condemned the act, stating, “Racism has no place in sport or society,” and promised to cooperate with Cheshire Police by sharing video and photographic evidence.
The club vowed to issue an indefinite ban to anyone found guilty of such behavior and expressed dismay at the actions of a “minority unable to behave responsibly.”
In a tragic twist, Chester FC later announced that the individual involved had d!ed. “It is with sadness that Chester FC has been made aware of the tragic de@th of the individual involved,” the club said, extending its condolences to the man’s family and friends.
Cheshire Police confirmed the man, who has not been publicly identified, was due to be questioned later regarding the incident. He was found d£ad on Sunday, December 1, at a residence in Flint, North Wales. Police stated there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his de@th, and the case will be referred to the coroner.
The alleged racist incident occurred when Dixon celebrated his team’s opening goal in front of Chester fans after Connor Woods scored a penalty in the 73rd minute. Warrington’s Josh Amis was later sent off, and Chester equalized in the 85th minute, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
Chester FC now faces an investigation by the Football Association. Cheshire Police have referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as per standard procedure.
