President Biden Accepts USD385M For Arms Sales To Taiwan Amidst Chinese Objections

The United States has approved arms sales to Taiwan valued at $385 million, encompassing spare parts for fighter jets, radar systems, and tactical communications equipment.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed the deals on Friday.

While the US does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, it remains the island’s most significant ally and primary arms supplier. These sales underscore Washington’s commitment to bolstering Taiwan’s defense capabilities amid escalating military pressure from China.

The first package, estimated at $320 million, includes spare parts for Taiwan’s F-16 fighter jets and radar systems, sourced from US military stockpiles. Deliveries are anticipated to begin in 2025.

“This proposed sale supports US national, economic, and security interests by aiding Taiwan’s efforts to modernize its armed forces and maintain credible defense capabilities,” the DSCA stated. It emphasized that the parts would enhance Taiwan’s readiness to address current and future threats.

The second package, worth $65 million, provides follow-on support for tactical communications systems, further enhancing Taiwan’s defense infrastructure. Both sales received State Department approval, and the DSCA formally notified Congress on Friday.

China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has consistently opposed US arms sales to the island. The announcement coincides with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s planned trip to Pacific allies, with stopovers in Hawaii and Guam.

Taiwan’s defense ministry welcomed the arms deals, noting their role in improving the F-16 fleet’s combat readiness and strengthening air defenses. “Taiwan and the United States will continue to solidify our security partnership,” the ministry stated.

The foreign ministry highlighted that this marks the 18th arms sale to Taiwan under President Joe Biden’s administration. It reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to countering China’s “military pressure and grey zone harassment,” referencing tactics aimed at destabilizing the island without initiating outright conflict.

China has increased its military activities near Taiwan, including regular incursions by aircraft and ships. On Saturday, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported spotting 18 Chinese aircraft, seven naval vessels, and two balloons near the island within a 24-hour period.
