The Duchess Of Edinburgh Embraces Historic Role, Continuing A 'Remarkable Legacy'

Duchess Sophie has stepped into a historic royal position previously held by her father-in-law, Prince Philip. Sophie, aged 59, is now the patron of Capability Scotland, an organization that has supported disabled individuals for over 75 years. The late Duke of Edinburgh served in this role for more than six decades.

The announcement comes on the International Day of People with Disabilities, highlighting the charity’s ongoing dedication to empowerment and inclusivity. To commemorate the occasion, the charity shared a heartfelt image of the Duchess during her earlier visit to their Riccarton campus and Craigmillar Hub.

During her visit, Her Royal Highness interacted with service users and staff, toured sensory and art spaces, and received a meaningful gift made by those supported at the hub.

Brian Logan, the chief executive of the organization, expressed excitement about Sophie’s appointment: “We are truly honored to welcome The Duchess of Edinburgh as our new Royal Patron. Her commitment to advocating for the rights of disabled people and her connection to our mission is inspiring.

“The Duchess has already demonstrated significant interest in our work through her visits, engaging with the individuals we serve and learning about our diverse range of services. Her involvement will undoubtedly help highlight the challenges faced by disabled individuals in Scotland while also celebrating their successes.

“This appointment continues a remarkable legacy of royal support for Capability Scotland, which began with the late Duke of Edinburgh over sixty years ago. Her Royal Highness’s patronage underscores the importance of our mission, and we eagerly anticipate collaborating to promote a more inclusive and equitable society for disabled people.”

As part of her involvement with the charity, the Duchess is set to attend key events such as the upcoming 80th-anniversary celebrations and will engage with the transformative work being done. Her role will also encompass recognizing and honoring the contributions of the dedicated staff and volunteers.
