Prince Albert Declares National Mourning Following Death Of Close Friend

Prince Albert has announced that Monaco will observe a day of national mourning on January 23 in honor of Didier Guillaume, the Minister of State for Monaco, who passed away at the age of 65.

Didier Guillaume, who had served in the role since September 2, 2024, passed away following hospitalization in Nice on January 10, 2025.

While details about his illness were not disclosed, it was initially anticipated that he would be unable to fulfill his duties for several weeks.

The Role of the Minister of State

The Minister of State serves as the de facto head of Monaco’s government, acting as the representative of the monarch. This position includes overseeing government operations and managing foreign relations. The role has been integral to Monaco’s governance since its establishment in 1911.

Official Observances

Prince Albert has ordered flags to be flown at half-mast on all public buildings in Monaco from Saturday, January 18, until the end of Didier Guillaume’s funeral. Additionally, a minute of silence will be observed at 11 a.m. on Monday, marked by a siren inviting residents to pay their respects.

Didier died on 17 January after spending a week in hospital

A chapel of rest, accompanied by a book of condolences, will be set up in the Chapel of Misericorde (Place de la Mairie). It will be open to the public from January 20 to January 22, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., allowing those who wish to pay their respects to do so.

In a statement, the palace expressed: “His Serene Highness renews his union of thought and prayer with the family and loved ones of Mr. Didier Guillaume, as well as with all those touched by his dedication and service.”

Recent Losses for Monaco’s Royal Family

This announcement comes shortly after another loss for Prince Albert and Princess Charlene. Last month, Fernanda Biffi Casiraghi, the mother-in-law of Prince Albert’s sister, Princess Caroline, passed away at the age of 99. Fernanda died on December 7, just months before her 100th birthday.

The principality mourns the passing of two individuals who were deeply connected to Monaco’s royal family and government.
