Drunkards Association Threatens Nationwide Protest Over Soaring Alcohol Prices

The Ghana Drunkards Association has issued a stern ultimatum to the government, demanding a reduction in alcohol prices within three weeks or face a nationwide protest involving its claimed 16.65 million members.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, June 15, 2025, a man identified as Moses Obuah—believed to be the association’s president or spokesperson—criticized the government for failing to lower alcohol prices despite the significant appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

“Alcohol prices have seen a consistent 15% increase, which is affecting both consumers and vendors,” Obuah stated. “We have observed that the cedi has appreciated in recent months, leading to price reductions on other goods. However, alcohol remains unaffected.”

Obuah directly appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Trade and Industry, urging them to address the issue promptly. “We are not only concerned about alcoholic beverages but also non-alcoholic drinks. Something must be done.”

He warned that failure to meet with the association for a dialogue within the next three weeks would result in mass protests nationwide. “If there is no action by then, over 16.6 million of our members across the country will take to the streets,” he declared.

The ultimatum follows a historic rebound of the Ghanaian cedi, which has strengthened by nearly 50% against the US dollar in 2025—making it the world’s best-performing currency so far this year, according to Bloomberg data. The cedi, which opened the year at ₵15 to the dollar, now trades at approximately ₵10.

The association argues that such currency strength should lead to lower prices for imported products, including alcoholic beverages—yet they claim that alcohol prices have remained disproportionately high.

As of now, the government and the Ministry of Trade and Industry have not responded to the association’s demands or indicated any intention to open discussions on alcohol pricing policy.
