EU Warns Ukraine War Could Drag On For Two More Years As Russia Escalates Attacks

The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, has warned that the war in Ukraine could continue for at least two more years, warning that the conflict has reached a “deadlock” with Russia growing increasingly aggressive — a reality underscored by this week’s large-scale strike on Poland.

Speaking to a group of European media outlets, Kallas said efforts to broker peace have so far failed, including attempts backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“A realistic scenario is that the war will continue for another couple of years,” Kallas said. “Putin has zero interest in peace and will not stop the war unless he is forced to.”

Analysts cited in El País suggest that a real breakthrough may not come until there are leadership changes on both sides of the conflict. Under a worst-case scenario, Kallas warned, Ukraine could be forced to cede some territory.

Beyond Ukraine, Kallas also pointed to China as a growing strategic challenge for the EU, citing Beijing’s support for Moscow and its “coercive economic practices.” She admitted the bloc still lacks a unified strategy for dealing with China’s global ambitions.

Russian Attack on Poland Heightens NATO Fears

On the night of September 10, Russia launched a massive drone assault on Poland, using 19 drones — only four of which were shot down. Wreckage was found across 11 towns and three voivodeships, suggesting a carefully planned strike. Some of the drones were identified as Gerbera models, which mimic Iranian Shahed drones to evade air defences.

Warsaw has since appealed to NATO for additional Patriot missile systems and is considering the creation of a “drone wall” along its borders to counter future attacks.

Frontline Update

Ukrainian officials reported more than 200 clashes in the past 24 hours as Russian forces launched dozens of missile and air strikes and deployed nearly 6,000 kamikaze drones. Despite the intensity of the fighting, Ukraine held its positions and repelled attacks on all fronts. Russian losses were estimated at around 900 personnel over the same period.

Kallas reiterated that Europe’s resolve remains unbroken: “Russia has not broken the resolve of Ukraine. It is not breaking ours either.”
